Paul Ryan took to Twitter to show off an effect of the recent Tax Reform Bill: a pay raise of $1.50 a week. Working 52 weeks a year, that’s $78 each year. The tweet, which has since been deleted, stated,
“A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, PA, said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week … she said [that] will more than cover her Costco membership for the year.”
The tweet also linked to this AP report describing recent pay raises. Twitter users were quick to call Ryan out, saying that $1.50 a week isn’t a good example of bigger paychecks. Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader, said,
“Ryan deleted his embarrassing tweet of a blatant admission because he and Republicans don’t want you to know the truth: the #GOPTaxScam is a gift to corporate America and the top 1% at your expense.”
Among other things, the Tax Bill made deep cuts to corporate taxes, while actually raising some Middle-Class taxes in the long term. It should also be known that Paul Ryan received $500,000 from the Koch brothers for passing the Tax Bill, over 6000 times greater than $78.
