What is Amazon HQ2, and Where will it Be?

In September of 2017, Amazon (AMZN) announced that they would be building a second headquarters, dubbed Amazon HQ2. This new headquarters would be entirely equal to their current headquarters in Seattle. With the announcement, Amazon requested that cities send proposals to be the home for HQ2. The requirements for being considered: have a business-friendly environment, have access to mass transit, be near a population center, and be located in North America.

Whichever city is chosen will see a massive economic boost, as Amazon expects to create 50,000 high paying jobs and invest over $5 billion. For these reasons, many cities requested to be chosen. Amazon got over 230 proposals, including multiple proposals from cities in Canada. Only 8 US States didn’t have a single city apply.

Just recently, Amazon narrowed down their decision to 20 cities:

  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Austin, Texas
  • Boston, Massachusetts
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Miami, Florida
  • Montgomery County, Maryland
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Newark, New Jersey
  • New York City, New York
  • Northern Virginia, Virginia
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Raleigh, North Carolina
  • Toronto, Ontario, Canada
  • Washington, D.C.

Many analysts and economists predict that Atlanta, Georgia is the frontrunner of these cities, followed by Raleigh, North Carolina and Washington, D.C. Amazon plans to make their decision by the end of this year.
